FOODS RICH IN POTASSIUM

Foods high in potassium are the best treatment for diabetes. It is because the intake of potassium increases the functioning of pancreas. The best dietary sources of potassium are fresh unprocessed foods, including meats, fish, vegetables chiefly potatoes, fruits mainly bananas, dried apricots, Citrus juices such as orange juice, dairy products and whole grains. Mostly potassium needs in a body can be met by eating a varied diet with adequate intake of milk, meats, cercal, vegetables and fruits. Potassium also helps in the normal functioning of kidney. It also plays a major solve in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle contraction.

Conditions like diarrhoea, vomiting, excessive sweating, malnutrition, can cause potassium deficiency. Drinking of more of coffee, alcohol increases the amount of potassium excretion in urine.

Potassium supplement should be taken at any age, only under the guidance of doctor. It is because too much potassium in the blood may lead to a condition known as hyperkalemia and too little of potassium in the blood leads to hypokalemia. Adequate amounts of magnesium are also needed to maintain normal levels of potassium. Generally, a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits provides all of the potassium needed. High dietary intake of potassium from fruits and vegetables throughout person’s life can help mass, hence, preventing bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis. Appropriate amount of potassium also helps in improving the blood pressure. Diet low in potassium is also associated with poor lung function and even asthma in children. So dietary intake of potassium helps in preventing or treating such diseases.
