Gestational diabetes (GD) simply means elevated blood sugar during pregnancy. To understand it, you must first understand the normal changes in pregnancy metabolism (34). When you are pregnant, certain hormones make your insulin less effective at transporting glucose, the body’s fuel, out of your bloodstream into your cells. This increases the amount of circulating glucose, making it available to your baby for growth and development. This “insulin resistance” increases as pregnancy advances. As a result, your blood glucose levels after eating rise linearly throughout pregnancy. By the third trimester, you will tend to have higher blood glucose levels after eating than nonpregnant women (hyperglycemia), despite secreting normal and above normal amounts of insulin. During overnight sleep, the excess insulin has a chance to mop up, which causes morning glucose levels to be lower on average than in nonpregnant women (hypoglycemia).Pregnancy Gestational Diabetes

How is it diagnosed?

Checking urine for glucose is a routine antenatal test, but is unreliable for diagnosing diabetes.

All mums-to-be should have their blood sugar level checked between 26 and 30 weeks of pregnancy. This is done by testing glucose levels in a sample of blood on two occasions. One of two tests will be used to do this: the random glucose test or the fasting glucose test.

If you have a high blood glucose reading on the glucose tolerance test it means that natural hormones secreted by your placenta during pregnancy have increased your body’s resistance to insulin; in other words, your body’s cells are not responding normally to insulin. This means that your body needs much more insulin than usual to carry out insulin’s job of helping the body cells and muscles to take up glucose from the bloodstream after a meal. The result is that the glucose stays around in the bloodstream, hence the high glucose reading of your blood test.

Unlike the diabetes that a woman may have before conception, gestational diabetes does not usually cause birth defects, in part because it sets in after all the baby’s major organs have already been formed. One major complication associated with GD is, as you noted, big babies. Macrosomia, the medical term for this condition, occurs when the unborn baby stores extra glucose as fat and sometimes becomes too large to deliver through the vaginal canal. But GD does not necessarily mean you must give up natural childbirth: nearly 70 percent of women with GD are able to give birth vaginally.

Complications of Maternal Diabetes

Women with diabetes need careful pre-pregnancy planning, intensive management throughout their pregnancy and close follow-up after giving birth. This is because gestational diabetes is associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, and with higher perinatal morbidity (sick newborns) and mortality rates. The major cause of perinatal mortality is congenital malformations, and women with diabetes are two to seven times more likely to have congenitally malformed offspring.

Gestational diabetes during pregnancy, increased levels of certain hormones made in the placenta (the organ that connects the baby by the umbilical cord to the uterus) help shift nutrients from the mother to the developing fetus. Other hormones are produced by the placenta to help prevent the mother from developing low blood sugar. They work by stopping the actions of insulin.

The aim of a good pregnancy gestational diabetes diet is to ensure that you do not have to resort to insulin injections till it becomes absolutely necessary. Many women develop diabetes during pregnancy. They need to cut down on sugar and starchy food in their diet. A pregnancy gestational diabetes diet is different from the best pregnancy diet for women without diabetes. Take care of your calorie levels, and how much you are consuming daily as fats, sugar etc.

Persons who cannot walk, jog or swim due to lack of desire (or unfavourable weather), persons who cannot undertake physical exercise because of a possibility of harming the kidneys or the heart and women who cannot spare special time for outdoor exercise can easily and safely obtain the benefits of exercise through yogasanas and pranayama. Even those persons who go for a walk or a swim in the morning can do yogasanas at some other time of the day when their stomachs are empty. Other forms of exercise and yoga can even be done on alternate days.Role of Diabetes and Exercise, Yoga treament

Excercises give following benefits:

1. Contracting of muscles use up a lot of sugar. This relieves much of pancreas burden.

2. Accumulated fat is used up. As a result, weight decreases, which on itself may ameliorate most symptoms of diabetes.

Tripped over a treatment quite by accident after having suffered a herniated disc in my lower back. Three doctors proclaimed, “Surgery!” This is a risky alternative in any case, but even more so because of my diabetes. Then I heard that regular practice of hatha yoga may help my back problem.

Pranayama –

There are 8 types of Pranayama mentioned in Hatha Yoga. One of the basic preparations for Pranayama is Nadi Shodhan Pranayama or alternate nostril breathing, this type is found useful in diabetes as Alternate nostril breathing has calming effect on nervous system, which reduces stress levels, helping in diabetes treatment. Also research has shown that Bhramari and Bhasrika Pranayama help in diabetes. Bharamari has calming effect on mind, brain and nervous system. Bhasrika Pranayama is revitalizing Pranayama, which increases oxygen levels and reduces carbon dioxide levels in the blood. In bhasrika Pranayama, the abdominal muscles and diaphragm are used which puts pressure on the internal organs. But before practicing these Pranayama, one must learn and practice deep breathing, fast breathing, alternate nostril breathing, Bandhas (Jalandhar bandha or chin lock, moola bandha and Uddiyan bandha or abdominal lock) from expert Guru.

The percentage of diabetic patients all over the world is increasing day by day.Diabetes is the third widespread and serious disease after heart disease and cancer. We need energy to carry out any activity by the body. Our body converts glucose into working power and remains active. Digestive process converts carbohydrates from our food into glucose. As the proportion of glucose in the blood increases, immediately pancreas gland situated behind the stomach releases hormones known as insulin. It converts glucose in the form of power and stores the extra glucose in the cells of liver and muscles. Thus the quantum of glucose in the blood remains balanced. Diabetes mellitus is a disease state in which pancreas not functions normally, no sufficient insulin is produced and so, the body is not capable to manage its food intake properly, body’s metabolism gets disturbed.

yoga also helps to relieve:

* Arthritis
* Headaches
* Backaches
* Menstrual disorders

Yoga for Diabetes and Obesity

In most cases, it is easy to ignore Diabetes in its early stage, especially when you see or feel no symptoms. This is dangerous. Diabetes affects almost all our major organs such as the heart, the Nerves, the eyes and the kidneys and can lead to both long and short term complications. Long term complications can be disabling or fatal, they also develop gradually. Keeping your blood sugar close to the normal level is the best way to reduce the risk of complications. This can be done through exercise and physical activity and taking medications. Strengthening your immune system is also vital since some illnesses can cause your body to produce more blood sugar. Constant watch on your glucose level is important when you are sick. Food and alcohol also has great effects on your blood sugar level.

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. People with diabetes have problems using food for energy. After a meal, carbohydrates in food are broken down into a sugar called glucose, which is carried by the blood to cells throughout the body. Cells require insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, to help use blood glucose for energy.

Type 1 Diabetes Myths

Type 1 diabetes is more serious than type 2

Type 1Diabetes myth is also widespread and its origin is historic. Before the discovery of insulin in 1922, the diagnosis of type 1 signified certain death within months. And while all people with type 1 require insulin to survive, it is possible to control type 2 without insulin. However a person may have type 2 for months or years before diagnosis, therefore serious complications, such as eye damage or kidney failure, may have already developed, making it more serious than type 1 in certain cases.

Type 1 Diabetes Myth is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s defense system attacks and destroys its own cells. Type 1 Diabetes myths, the immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, which is a hormone that is used by the body to convert sugars and carbohydrates into the energy that is needed for your body to maintain its normal function. Once these cells are destroyed, the body does not produce enough insulin to convert the sugars and carbohydrates that are consumed. This can lead to other, life threatening illnesses and diseases.

The Truth: Whole-grain breads, cereals and pasta, brown rice and starchy vegetables such as potatoes, yams, peas and corn are part of a healthy meal plan and can be included in your meals and snacks. These foods, high in complex carbohydrates, are also a good source of fiber, which helps keep your gastrointestinal system running smoothly. The key is portion size. Most people with diabetes should limit themselves to three or four servings of complex carbohydrates a day.

I disagree. The presence of these markers strongly suggests an autoimmune process, the probability of a lack of long-term efficacy of sulfonylureas, and the lack of insulin resistance and thus indicates that there is no need to waste time with metformin or a thiazolidinedione. Furthermore, insulin likely retards the autoimmune destruction of the beta.gif (968 bytes)-cells

Type 1 and type 2 may differ in the way they develop in the body, but if neglected, both can lead to devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, sexual dysfunction, nerve damage, kidney failure, blindness, amputation and even death. Both types are serious and require full attention.

The disease process in classical Type 1 diabetes patients (IDDM) is believed to be autoimmune. In contrast, the disease process in classical Type 2 diabetes patients (NIDDM) is not autoimmune and a decreased sensitivity to insulin action is the main abnormality. The clinical distinction of Type 1 diabetes versus Type 2 diabetes is recognized to be imperfect and has limitations. There is a group of individuals (Type 1 1/2 diabetes), who present like typical NIDDM, but have some of the immunological and clinical features of IDDM. We review the current medical literature on Type 1 1/2 diabetes with special reference to its clinical characteristics, natural history and pathophysiology. Since the distinction between these two forms of diabetes may have important therapeutic implications especially with regards to the benefits of insulin therapy in patients with Type 1 1/2 diabetes and because of the need for uniformity in its diagnosis we recommend that both clinical plus biochemical criteria (the presence of ICA and/or GAD Ab, HLA typing and tests to quantify beta cell function) be used to make a diagnosis. Comparative studies in the area of cytokine production, T cell reactivity and autoantibody clustering between classic Type 1 diabetes and Type 1 1/2 diabetes patients are needed as are studies with the animal model of Type 1 1/2 diabetes, Psammomys obesus.

Diabetes is a group of diseases that doesn’t allow your body to properly convert the food you eat into energy. The main types are type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The cause differs for each, but common to all is high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Managing any type of diabetes requires balancing food, physical activity and, if needed, medications. People with type 1 diabetes (formerly juvenile onset diabetes) will need to take some form of insulin for the rest of their lives.

Most women with diabetes who become pregnant have Type 1 diabetes, because this is the type that affects younger women. However, increasing numbers of pregnant women with Type 2 diabetes are being seen.If you have diabetes and want to start a family, there are a number of things to consider. The key to a healthy pregnancy with diabetes is good blood sugar control before, during and after pregnancy. If you are not already doing it, you will be taught how to check your own blood sugar levels (using a finger-prick sample of blood) several times a day before and after meals. Using these results, the amounts of food and insulin can be altered to achieve blood glucose levels ideally 4 to 7 mmol/l (70 to 120 mg/dl) before meals and no more than 10 mmmol/l (180 mg/dl) after meals. Another test called HbA1c or fructosamine will be done to check your diabetes control. Really good control of your diabetes makes it less likely that the baby will grow too large, and also reduces risks of other complications.

Most women with Pregnanacy Gestational Diabetes, can complete pregnancy and begin labor naturally. Some pregnant woman have a slight chance (about 5 percent) of developing preclampsia (toxemia), a sudden onset of high blood pressure associated with protein in the urine, occurring late in pregnancy. If preclampsia develops, your obstetrician may recommend an early delivery.

Gestational diabetes is a complication in about 5% of pregnancies and is on the increase. Where the diabetes can’t be controlled through diet and exercise, insulin therapy is often used to significantly improve the health outcomes for both baby and mother.
“But the use of insulin requires injections and women need to be educated in its use,” Dr Hague says. “Insulin therapy can also cause low blood glucose and weight gain in the mother, whereas use of metformin usually returns blood glucose to normal, rather than dropping it too low, and is also associated with maternal weight loss.

Discussion of prenatal vitamins. Before becoming pregnant, start taking a daily vitamin that contains folic acid. Folic acid has been shown to decrease the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida — a serious condition in which the brain and spinal cord do not form normally. The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation recommends taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily before conception and in early pregnancy.
Only your doctor can decide what diabetes treatment is right for you. He or she will assess the risks and benefits of your treatment options. Be sure to discuss your health history, including any medicines that you take.

If diet and exercise don’t keep blood sugar controlled, then your doctor will likely prescribe insulin. Remember insulin doesn’t cross the placenta so it has no direct effect on your baby. Although, the thought of daily injections is very unpleasant for most patients oral medications have yet to be proven as effective as insulin in controlling blood sugar during pregnancy. The major side effect of insulin therapy is possible low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Hypoglycemia appears to affect the mother more than the fetus.

Diabetic complications can be classified broadly as microvascular or macrovascular disease. Microvascular complications include neuropathy (nerve damage), nephropathy (kidney disease) and vision disorders (eg retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract and corneal disease). Macrovascular complications include heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease (which can lead to ulcers, gangrene and amputation). Other complications of diabetes include infections, metabolic difficulties, impotence, autonomic neuropathy and pregnancy problems.Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels. This can lead to health problems (complications). Keeping your blood sugar in your target ranges can help prevent or delay complications.

Long-term Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy’ is the term used to describe changes in the nervous system resulting from diabetes mellitus. One type of diabetic neuropathy is described as a condition in which cats walk or stand with their hocks touching the ground. This condition may occur as one of the early signs of diabetes in the cat, or it can occur later in the stage of the disease, especially if the cat is poorly regulated. Other cats with diabetic neuropathy may appear to limp or simply to have hind limb weakness.

Long term complications of Diabetes: Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart or cardiovascular diseases are four times more prominent in people with diabetes. These problems include heart attack, stroke, chest pain or angina, high Blood Pressure, narrowing of arteries and poor blood circulation or peripheral vascular disease and hardening of arteries or arteriosclerosis.

Eye Disease - Long Term Complications: Diabetes

Diabetic retinopathy

This condition affects the blood vessels in the retina, the back layer of the eye where images are captured and recorded. The retina converts light energy into electrical impulses and sends visual images to the brain along the optic nerve. After 20 years, nearly all people with type 1 diabetes and 60% of those with type 2 diabetes have developed retinopathy. By that time, half of all people with type 1 diabetes and 10% of those with type 2 diabetes have the more serious, advanced form, known as proliferative retinopathy. However, tighter glucose control should substantially decrease these numbers in the future.

Long-Term Complications Type 1 Diabetes

Intensive control of blood glucose and keeping glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels below 7%. This approach is proving to prevent complications due to vascular (blood vessel) abnormalities and nerve damage (neuropathy) that can cause major damage to organs, including the eyes, kidneys, and heart.

Major Types of Long-term Diabetes Complications

Gastroparesis: This is the result of damage to the vagus nerve. This nerve orchestrates the emptying of the stomach, and when it begins to fail, food either remains in the stomach for too long or gets emptied out too early. One result is that you can’t predict when your stomach will be digesting food, which can seriously hamper your ability to time some diabetes medicines and your blood glucose control. The best way to prevent permanent nerve damage is to have blood glucose levels as normal as possible as often as possible.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition caused by too much glucose in your blood. Your blood sugar level can be too high if your body doesn’t make enough of the hormone insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas (a gland behind the stomach) and moves glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it’s broken down to produce energy.
If diabetes is not treated, it can cause long-term health problems because the high glucose levels in the blood damage the blood vessels.Herbs Treatment for Diabetes-

Bitter Melon

Bitter melon has been used extensively in traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Its blood sugar lowering capabilities has attracted diabetics to this herbal supplements for centuries. Charantin, one of the active ingredients in Bitter melon, has been shown to be a potent hypoglycemic agent. It has similar effects to many hypoglycemic drugs used in diabetes treatment. Momordica, another active ingredient, has insulin-like effects, further decreasing blood glucose levels. Due to the potent hypoglycemic effect this supplement should be taken with care when using medications to control diabetes.

Possible Herbal Treatments For Diabetes

Garlic and onions are best known for their cardiovascular benefits, however a few studies have shown that they can be beneficial in lowering blood glucose levels. Onions can increase the production of insulin in your body, which will lower high glucose levels in your blood.

Treatment of diabetes with herbal treatments

This scenario increases the importance of the pharmacist’s role in aiding diabetic customers because actively counseling patients about interactions of “natural” substances with their medications is a key function of the pharmacy that can increase shopper loyalty.

Choose minced chicken, chicken wings, fish, fresh not tinned & keep them small like pilchards, sardines, whiting, liver 1 x a week only for the wonderful Vitamins it stores.

Veges cook some extra for your cat, mashed sweet potato, pumpkin, creamed corn or put a selection of raw vegies through a food processor & make it more palatable by mixing in a little oil which they find tasty.

There is a close relationship between the rate of total effectiveness and the patient’s condition.
Patients with mild diabetes had the best treatment rate of 88%.
Patients with more serious diabetes had the lowest effectiveness rate of 75%.

TREATMENT OF DIABETES WITH CHINESE HERBS

The disease etiology-according to traditional ideas-is described this way in modern China (7): “Diabetes mellitus originates from deficiency of yin and is manifested externally as a syndrome of excessive heat. With progress of the disease, deficiency of yin produces dry-heat which in turn damages qi and yin, leading to deficiency of both yin and yang.” In light of this explanation, researchers examining 60 diabetes patients, mostly with insulin-independent type diabetes, found that the first stage of disease (with yin deficiency and excess heat) developed over a period of about 3 years, the intermediate stage (with deficiency of qi and yin) developed over a period of about 5 years, and the late stage (with deficiency of qi, yin, and yang) developed over a period of about 8 years. Disorders of blood circulation also progressed over time. Early-onset insulin-dependent diabetes progresses very rapidly to the third stage in most individuals.

Type 1 diabetes is a completely different disease than Type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Scientists believe that it may be a virus that triggers the immune system to attack the cells and permanently destroy them. The pancreas can no longer make the insulin necessary to transport sugar from the blood into the other cells of the body for energy. Sugar builds up in the blood and over time can damage internal organs and blood vessels.Type 1 Diabetes Information

Type 1 diabetes occurs when certain specialized parts of the pancreas, known as islet cells, are destroyed and no longer produce insulin. Insulin helps the body efficiently capture energy from the food we eat, and is necessary to the proper functioning of the body. Type 1 diabetes usually develops in childhood or adolescence (hence the term “juvenile diabetes”), and accounts for 10 per cent of all diabetes cases in Canada.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, an organ about the size of a hand that is located behind the lower part of the stomach. These cells — called beta cells — are contained, along with other types of cells, within small islands of endocrine cells called the pancreatic islets. Beta cells normally produce insulin , a hormone that helps the body move the glucose contained in food into cells throughout the body, which use it for energy. But when the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and the glucose stays in the blood instead, where it can cause serious damage to all the organ systems of the body.

Until scientists have perfected ways to better treat and possibly even prevent or cure diabetes, parents can help their children lead happier, healthier lives by giving constant encouragement, arming themselves with diabetes information, and making sure their children eat properly, exercise, and stay on top of blood sugar control every day. Doing so will enable kids to do all the things that other children do while helping them grow up to be healthy, well-adjusted, productive adults.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not known. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 3% of all new cases of diabetes each year. There is 1 new case per every 7,000 children per year. New cases are less common among adults older than 20.

Diabetes is currently an incurable condition in which too much glucose (sugar) is present in the blood. Find out more about the different types and how it’s treated.Types of Diabetes

The two main types of diabetes are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after the birth of the baby.

Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when the blood glucose level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. If left untreated, people with pre-diabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes- Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body’s immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This type of diabetes, also known as juvenile-onset diabetes, accounts for 10-15% of all people with the disease. It can appear at any age, although commonly under 40, and is triggered by environmental factors such as viruses, diet or chemicals in people genetically predisposed. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin several times a day and follow a careful diet and exercise plan.

Type 2 Diabetes- The most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. About 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. This form of diabetes is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, previous history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and ethnicity. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Secondary Types of Diabetes

Secondary types of diabetes are due to a number of causes or states, such as injury to or surgical removal of the pancreas. Additional causes are associated with inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) or elevated plasma iron associated with an enlarged liver, pigmentation of the skin, and (frequently) cardiac failure. Hormonal diseases such as Cushing’s disease (puffy red face) or acromegaly (large face, long arms and hands) may also cause diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

Some women develop gestational diabetes during the late stages of pregnancy. Although this form of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, a woman who has had it is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes is caused by the hormones of pregnancy or a shortage of insulin.

Misdiagnosis or an unclear diagnosis of diabetes can create problems in treatment. Misunderstanding the causes and changes in the disease as you age also can lead to mistreatment. For these reasons, a clear understanding of the types of diabetes is essential.

The major goal in treating diabetes is to minimize any elevation of blood sugar (glucose) without causing abnormally low levels of blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet. Type 2 diabetes is treated first with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, treatment with insulin is considered.

Treatment for Diabetes

When treating diabetes, management strategies should be planned along with a qualified health care team. Never make changes to treatment schedule or management routine without consulting a medical professional, no matter what advice you are given elsewhere.

The discovery, announced Wednesday, prompted U.S. officials to halt one part of the study 18 months early to protect the safety of participants. Patients who were receiving intense treatment to lower blood-sugar levels are now getting the less intensive standard treatment.

Diabetes must be treated with insulin. This involves injecting insulin under the skin for it to work. Insulin cannot be taken as a pill because the digestive juices in the stomach would destroy the insulin before it could work. Scientists are looking for new ways to give insulin. But today, shots are the only method. There are, however, new methods to give the shots…Insulin Pumps are now being widely used and many people are having great results. A new page on insulin pumps will be on line soon.

The results of DCCT are extraordinary in that they prove that tight control of glucose levels can in fact dramatically slow the onset and progression of diabetic complications in both Type I and Type II diabetes. Additionally, researchers have found strict attention to diet and exercise also helps in the management of diabetes.

Diabetes treatment: Using insulin to manage your blood sugar

To determine how much insulin you need and the most effective type of insulin therapy, your doctor will consider various factors — including the type of diabetes you have, how much your blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day and your lifestyle.

Diabetes has been around for centuries. There are presently sixteen millions diabetics in America, but eight million do not know that they have the disease. Today, diabetes is in third place as the cause of mortality, behind cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Herbs for Diabetes

One Chinese herb that shows promise in the treatment of diabetes in called mai men dong or ophiopogon. Research done in China has demonstrated that it can potentially stimulate regeneration of cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The cells in this part of the pancreas are responsible for the proper production of insulin, and therefore the proper processing of blood sugar in the body. Stimulating regeneration of these cells can potentially reverse diabetes in adult-onset diabetics.

Gymnema Sylvestre (Gurmar, Meshasringi, Cherukurinja)
Gymnema assists the pancreas in the production of insulin in Type 2 diabetes. Gymnema also improves the ability of insulin to lower blood sugar in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It decreases cravings for sweet. This herb can be an excellent substitute for oral blood sugar-lowering drugs in Type 2 diabetes. Some people take 500 mg per day of gymnema extract.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)
Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the antidiabetic properties of fenugreek seeds. The active ingredient responsible for the antidiabetic properties of fenugreek is in the defatted portion of the seed that contains the alkaloid trogonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin.

Asian Ginseng – Asian Ginseng or Panax Ginseng is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy for diabetes. It enhances the release of insulin from the pancreas and to increase the number of insulin receptors. Studies show that it has a direct glucose lowering effects.

Kino (Pterocarpus Marsupium) is also known as Dragon’s Blood, Pitasara and Venga. It has been used for centuries in the Ayurvedic traditional medical system of India for diabetes, and is showing promise in modern studies on the disease. The gum resin of this Indian tree has the look of dried blood, hence the name. An alcohol extract of the resin and the flavonoid epicatechin extracted from the bark of the tree both have been shown to prevent pancreatic alpha cell damage in rats and to actually regenerate beta cells. These pancreatic cells directly or indirectly control metabolic processes to balance blood sugar levels in the blood stream.

Ginko Biloba – Ginko Biloba is another popular herb from the rich traditional Chinese medicine culture. It has been useful in treatment and prevention of the early stages of diabetic neuropathy.

Goat’s Rue – Goats rue, French Lilac or Galega has an consists of an alkaloid called Galegin. When Galegin was isolated from the original plant and used to treat diabetes mellitus it showed remarkable results in lowering blood sugar levels.
