Diabetes Type and Differences
Diabetes is a disease that effects all age groups and its becoming more and more common in today’s society for a number of reasons. Although the symptoms are very similar, there are clear differences between the two major types of diabetes which effect people for different reasons. Type one diabetes can occur at any age but is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. With this type of diabetes a person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin. Its known as insulin dependent or juvenile diabetes. People with type one diabetes must inject insulin into their bodies several times everyday.
Although people with type one diabetes must inject insulin for the rest of their lives it doesn’t mean that they can’t live a long and productive life. Because most people are diagnosed at a young age they become easily accustomed to the treatment unlike people with type two diabetes who find it harder to adjust and tend to ignore many treatment options.
It was thought that type one diabetes was hereditary and effected people with relatives who already had the disease, but studies have shown that 90% of children who develop type one diabetes actually have no relative with the disease. This indicates that there are also non hereditary factors involved.
The causes of type one diabetes are not entirely known but scientists believe that the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Its not caused by obesity or by eating excessive amounts of sugar as was once thought.
Type two diabetes can occur at any age but is usually diagnosed in adults over the age of 40. With this type of diabetes a person’s pancreas still produces insulin but the body does not produce enough or is not able to use it effectively. Its known as non insulin dependent or adult onset diabetes. People with type two diabetes must control their diet, take regular exercise, and monitor their blood glucose levels.
The medical community agree that there is a clear link between the rise of obesity and the rise of type two diabetes in the modern world. A diet consisting of saturated fats, high levels of sugar, and excessive amounts of carbohydrates will lead to obesity and an increased risk of developing type two diabetes.
People who develop type two diabetes can avoid the use of insulin by monitoring their blood glucose levels, taking regular exercise, having a healthy diet, and using prescribed medication if required. People who are not successful at changing their lifestyle and modifying their diet will need to take insulin.
